National Apprenticeship Week is a time to celebrate the incredible impact apprenticeships have on individuals, businesses, and the wider economy. At BDN, we are passionate about investing in young, local talent, nurturing the next generation of industry professionals through high-quality apprenticeship opportunities.
With three apprentices currently developing their careers with us and many more who have successfully completed apprenticeships at BDN, we understand the value of learning while working. Our apprentices gain hands-on experience, develop industry-leading skills, and benefit from mentorship that helps them progress in their chosen fields.
But don’t just take our word for it—here’s what some of our apprentices, past and present, have to say about their experience:
“I completed a Degree Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering where I studied part-time at Teesside University alongside working at BDN. Throughout the apprenticeship I have progressed from Junior Technician to Structural Technician and now Structural Engineer after successfully completing my End Point Assessment.
“Teesside University offers a degree which is accredited by The Institution of Civil Engineers. The End Point Assessment was also the IEng assessment and I am now an Incorporated Engineer with ICE.
“For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would recommend a higher/degree apprenticeship which is accredited through a professional body. This allows apprentices to not only complete their education, but it provides a solid platform from which to kickstart their career after university.”
“I am currently completing an Architect Degree Apprenticeship with Northumbria University. If you’re considering a career in architecture, this is by far the best route. It’s fast-paced and challenging, but it helps build a strong skills set and provides invaluable experience by working four days a week alongside professionals.
“A huge advantage of this route is avoiding significant student debt, which makes it even more appealing!”
“I am currently in my second year of a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering. One of the biggest things I’ve learned so far is the importance of asking questions and seeking help when needed. It might feel daunting at first, but being proactive in learning and engaging with experienced colleagues really makes a difference.
“The more you engage, the more you’ll learn and grow in your role. Seeking guidance from mentors and team members accelerates both professional and personal development, making the apprenticeship experience even more valuable.”
“I’m completing a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Construction and the Built Environment. One key thing I’ve learned is the importance of communicating with your team. Strong teamwork and support make a huge difference in learning and progressing.”
At BDN, we believe apprenticeships are a fantastic way for young people to gain real-world experience and earn qualifications, as well as for businesses to retain their talents here in the North East. They provide the perfect balance of education and industry exposure, setting apprentices up for long-term success.
