A FORMER engineering apprentice at award-winning practice Building Design Northern has been shortlisted for two awards at the inaugural North East Apprenticeship Awards.
Structural Engineer Joshua Chapman has been shortlisted for Engineering/Manufacturing and Degree Apprentice of the Year at the upcoming North East ceremony.
Beginning his career as a Structural Technician Apprentice at Arup, Josh quickly progressed to a Chartered Structural Technician within a few years. In 2018, Josh joined Building Design Northern (BDN) as a Junior Engineer and began a Degree Apprenticeship with Teesside University, where he studied BEng in Civil Engineering alongside full-time employment.
After four years of University studies, Josh completed his Bachelor’s Degree in May this year, achieving a First Class Honours Degree.
In collaboration with the Sunderland Echo, South Shields Gazette, Northumberland Gazette and News Post Leader, the awards seek to recognise the hardworking individuals and organisations involved in apprenticeships and how they shape the future.
“We are extremely proud of Josh and the incredible achievements he has made in his career to date. Josh is an asset to BDN and to be shortlisted for two awards is a testament to the hard-work and commitment Josh displayed throughout his apprenticeship.”
Reflecting on his success, Josh said, “It is an honour to have been recognised amongst such talented individuals across the North East.
“I am very grateful to BDN for supporting me over the course of my apprenticeship and for giving me the opportunities in the workplace to improve my understanding of structural engineering.”
Luke Darwin, Director of Structural Engineering, said, “We are extremely proud of Josh and the incredible achievements he has made in his career to date. Josh is an asset to BDN and to be shortlisted for two awards is a testament to the hard-work and commitment Josh displayed throughout his apprenticeship.”
