Structural and Civil Engineering
BDN carried out the Civil and Structural Engineering for the scheme located adjacent to the Half Tide Basin, in the Port of Sunderland. Proposals for the project were for the installation of tallow oil storage silos, along with associated access and containment bunds.
Structurally, a piled raft foundation was designed to support 18 No. 22m tall silos. The design process was made more difficult by unknown structures within the historic dry dock, resulting in a hybrid raft design.
The development was completed on behalf of Leo Group, with an aim to develop a facility in the north-east to store and export their products to mainland Europe.
