Structural and Civil Engineering
BDN were appointed as Structural and Civil Engineers to provide design and engineering services to allow for the construction of the development on the former Turners garage site, Sedgefield. The scheme comprised of 71 two, three, and four-bedroom homes for affordable rent on behalf of Livin Housing.
The ground conditions within Salters Lane were particularly challenging due to existing historical foundations with substantial made ground over. To mitigate this, BDN liaised with Geotechnical specialists to assess challenges associated with historic structures – enhancing the design through multi-disciplinary working. This allowed us to identify solutions to suit the development, exploring options based on time, cost and suitability.
A bulk earthworks plan was implemented to deal with considerable obstructions underground. This was achieved by digging out the entire site. We performed a full turnover to a depth of up to 4m, down to natural ground.
The earth was re-compacted in a carefully engineered manner in accordance with specifications for highways works. BDN’s design utilised shallow raft foundations to minimise the excavation requirements within the remediated land.
BDN were novated as a D+B consultant to provide assistance and site support for the duration of the on-site works. This involved carrying out routine inspections during the construction process and production of site specific details to assist the contractor in the installation of various elements across the site.
The development was shortlisted for ‘Best Development for Social / Affordable Rent’ at the 2022 Northern Housing Awards.
