Structural and Civil Engineering
BDN provided Civil and Structural design, on behalf of Calmont Homes, for the proposed development of 61 houses. Located in Middleton St. George, the scheme comprised of a mixture of 3 and 4-bedroomed dwellings, both detached and semi-detached, ranging in height between 2 and 3 storeys.
Our design for the site encompassed the setting out for all buildings and external paved areas, road layout and construction details, including the Section 38 agreement adoption plans, permeable paving details and street lighting plans. Services also included the main foul and surface water drainage design, encompassing the Section 104 agreement for sewers and adopted pumping station, and the private drainage for each plot.
BDN were commissioned to design, detail and gain approval for the highways and drainage, together with the structural design of their prestigious housing development. The highways are designed in accordance with Manual for Streets and adopt the relatively new approach of shared surfaces for traffic and pedestrians. This requires a careful balance between appearance and practicality.
The drainage flow was attenuated in storage tanks prior to discharge from site, into an existing watercourse. This early involvement enabled a clear understanding of the requirement of all stakeholders to be established and developed. The scheme included a variety of house types to address requirements of the client. A number of foundation solutions were developed to address ground conditions and site constraints, and to deliver a cost-effective solution which met the required build programme and phasing.
